Heat index to reach 40ºC this week

Take precautions against heat cramps and exhaustion as the heat index is expected to reach above 40 degrees Celsius later this week, the state weather bureau advised people in Metro Manila and in Laoag and Tuguegarao cities in Northern Luzon yesterday.

CILACAP, Indonesia (AP) — Indonesia brushed aside last-minute appeals and executed eight people convicted of drug smuggling, according to foreign governments and local media reports Wednesday, although a Philippine woman was granted a stay of execution. The Indonesian government has not confirmed the executions, but local media reported that the eight had been executed, citing official though unidentified sources.

Indonesia gears up for executions as families wail in grief

Indonesia made final preparations Tuesday to execute eight foreigners by firing squad, as family members wailed in grief during last visits to their loved ones and ambulances carrying white coffins arrived at the drug convicts' prison. Relatives of Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan, the Australian ringleaders of the so-called "Bali Nine" heroin trafficking group, arrived at Nusakambangan prison calling for mercy for their loved ones, with Sukumaran's sister collapsing in grief, an AFP reporter at the scene said.

Asean concerned but won’t confront China

KUALA LUMPUR – Leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have for the first time expressed serious concern over China’s massive reclamation activities in the South China Sea. The grouping is expected to push for a code of conduct in disputed waters but will reportedly avoid taking a confrontational approach in dealing with China. China’s construction of an airstrip and other structures on coral reefs threatens to “undermine peace, security and stability” in the region, ASEAN leaders warned yesterday.
